New teacher from the SS dept. - Written by posted on 07 Sep 2009
“I am surprised at what a great school this is and how wonderful the students are,” said Ms. Stelter, one of LP’s new teachers in the Social Sciences Department. She is among the other new teachers in the department and at Lawrence Park this year. Ms. Djuricic and Ms. Spooner are also new to the faculty.

Our three young teachers bring on a cheery note and a fresh start to the school year after the many departures of Lawrence Park teachers last year.

This is not their first year of teaching, and Ms. Stelter has come to the great Lawrence Park family from the beaches area.

So what do they think of Lawrence Park?

“Lawrence Park has an outstanding reputation, great staff and a very enthusiastic and creative student body, ” says Ms. Djuricic, also known as Ms. D.

“[Lawrence Park] has met and exceeded all of my expectations so far. I love it here,” replies Ms. Spooner.

Aside from the teachers’ thoughts on Lawrence, here are some thoughts students in their classes should keep in mind--a few expectations of theirs to give students a heads up.

Ms. Stelter told us that she kept things “pretty casual unless I need to be more firm” and that she is a “pretty strict marker.”

Ms. Djuricic said that she has high expectations because she believes that her students are capable of high achievement.

Ms. Spooner also has high expectations, and stresses the process of learning and encourages students to put much effort into their work.

With high expectations from students, the new teachers try to maintain high expectations for themselves too. “I see myself as a challenger of the traditional ideas that surround the study of history,” Ms. Spooner told us. “I feel it is my job in my subject [civics] to help students develop their own political beliefs as well as to help them develop the skills necessary to take action against issues that they feel strongly about.”

Apart from the classrooms, Ms. Djruicic is also involved with the equity club, assisting the dance club, and hopes to “get on a couple of school ski trips.” She also mentioned, “I can’t wait to bring on new ideas to the school, get involved in different student clubs and get to know the school better.”

The other two teachers also hope to get more involved with extra curricular activities as they get to know the school better.

Ms. Spooner and Ms. Skelter had this to say in conclusion:

“Thank you for making my first three weeks at LP a wonderful experience,” said Ms. Spooner. “And, overtime I hope to be able to get to know more and more students through both classes and extracurricular activities.”

As for Ms. Stelter, she told us, “I am very happy to be here. I am surprised at what a great school this is and how wonderful the students are, and I’m really looking forward to working with the students as a coach and as a teacher throughout the year, and the years to come. I really love it here.”

It seems the teachers are having a great start, and we really hope they enjoy not only their first year at LP, but also the years to come. Welcome to Lawrence Park!
