“…Make it a good year!” Written by Chloe Danzig and Jackie Pivovarov posted on 07 Sep 2009
What do the Beatles, The Who, Al Gore and your best friend all have in common? They are all potential role models. As such, they all had to start somewhere. Whether it was as high school presidents or buddy coordinators (or neither), what remains clear is that they had to do something unique and put themselves out there in order to do so.

Fortunately, Lawrence Park offers several opportunities for anyone to get involved. The opportunity to significantly increase your standard of high school living can be found in: the student council, sports teams, intramurals, the drama club, the music department, yearbook design, buddy coordinators and so much more. A woman of many words once said, “In high school, the more involved you get, the more fun you have. Buddies give senior students the opportunity to share their experiences with the younger grades so that they too can have a fantastic time at LP” (Katie Packman, buddy coordinator).

Katie was not the only one who was interviewed. Sarah Ho, the president of the LP Student Council, had this to say about the importance of getting involved: “Your outlook on high school is basically determined on what you put into it. The more involved you get, the better your years will be! I know that running for elections can be stressful, but in truth, everything is just meant to be fun. When running for elections, there are 10 main positions, 6 of which are chosen by the school. The first week of May is usually when elections are held from ‘bribe week’ through to the final video-showing and ballot count. The ten main positions include: president and vice president, secretary, treasurer, internal events director, social convenor, 2 liaison officers and 2 public affair officers. Truly, getting involved through parliament has made my years here all the better!”

As you can see, student politics changed Sarah’s high school life for the better and offered a wide variety of opportunities beyond academics. However, if politics is not your interest there are numerous other ways to get involved.

Elliot Meyer, the head of Stage Crew and a prominent member of the Music Council, has this to say: “I have a lot of fun being on stage crew, since it's the most influential and selective club in school. We do everything from assemblies to events and are very involved with the drama program. We do the entire tech for the play and drama one-acts.”

By now, it Lawrence Park’s great hope, that the repetitive and cheesy message is now securely embedded. However, if it is not, try to have some faith in your fellow students and take the advice handed to you. Do something, get involved, be part of something greater than yourselves! No one knows what the future has in store (except Futureshop), so join a club, get involved and see what happens.

As a bold man once said, “Don’t have a good year, make it a good year!” - Bruce McGregor (LP’s principal.)
