What's great about the Lawrence Park CI Library?
Literature:
- The LP library has an enormous selection of literature.
- There are many different types of literature to fit the scholarly needs and personal interests of the students.
- The LP library has books of all genres written by people of all different origins, dealing with different cultures, regions and time periods.
- There are books ranging from fiction to non-fiction, from British novels to African stories, from drama to suspense.
- There is a large selection of plays from short modern plays, to epic masterpieces, even translated plays from a variety of different languages.
Whether it be classics such as Shakespeare’s drama and Dickens’s novels, or modern-day works such as the Confessions of a Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella or Bridget Jones’ Diary by Helen Fielding, the LP library is sure to fit the needs of every student.
French:
- The LP library has one of the best selections of French literature and reference books around.
- We have a wide variety of French novels for class assignments or even pleasure reading.
- It has a large selection of reference books with enough information to cover projects in almost all topics.
The library strongly supports the French program, and has all the resources a French student will need during his or her four years at LP.
Reference:
- The LP library has a wide variety of reference material, from general encyclopedias such as Britannica to specific, topic-oriented material such as Literary Lifelines.
- It also has a large selection of magazines and periodicals, such as historical resources for research projects, Time and Report on Business for current events, even Sports Illustrated and Elle for light reading.
- It has a large collection of word study references; from the extensive Oxford English dictionary, to French and German dictionaries, to a selection of thesauruses and even dictionaries of quotations.
- Whether a student needs to find some general information on Karl Marx, is studying current Canadian politics, needs to translate the German word 'Errungenschaft' into English, or find out what a “lorgnette” is, they need simply to take a quick visit to the library.
Computers and Online Resources:
- The library has over 20 computers, all high-speed Internet accessible.
- It has committed a large amount of funds to offer the students first rate online resources.
- Through the Lawrence Park Library homepage Students have full access to databases such as E-STAT, EBSCO, Gale Databases, Toronto Star Pages of the past and online encyclopedias such as Grolier, Encarta, and the Canadian Encyclopedia.
- Students also have access to TDSB and Toronto Public library catalogues, career resource centres, search engines and much, much more.
These online resources help students with all subject topics and range from general to highly specific and academic information.
Library Visits:
- At least once a month students head to the library with their English class to attend different teaching sessions.
- Sometimes students will learn how to make good use of the library’s many resources, or how to write proper bibliographies (a must for almost all assignments).
- Sometimes students will learn about different types of literature like biographies and different types of writers like English playwrights.
- For major projects and assignments, students will attend seminars dealing with the resources most useful to the topic at hand. Students will often have several trolleys filled with books dealing with their topic, already taken off the shelves, so they can easily find what they are looking for.
Using the library can be confusing for even the most capable of students. The library staff teaches students, step by step, how to make best use of the resources the library has to offer.
