LP Boys Soccer Achievements
Jon Mabraidopoulas
This year the Jr. and Sr. Boys Soccer teams both had outstanding
seasons. For LP, the history for the Boys Soccer team has not been that
special, with only one finalist banner to show for it. This year the expectations
for the Boys Soccer teams were set really high, as many students tried out. Mr.
Platt finalized and coached both the teams. The season started out with many
practices to get in shape. Once the season started, many other teams may have
written LP off; however both teams started out well and finished strong.
The Junior Boys Soccer team played a great
season, finishing 2nd place overall with a 5-1-0 record, along with scoring the
most goals in the south region. Their leading goal scorer, John Sargeant helped them to all their wins. They ended up
making it to the South Region playoffs. The playoffs started out with a
dominant 7-0 win in the first round, followed by a thrilling quarterfinal game
against Oakwood CI were the team ended up coming back and winning 4-3. Next the
Junior Boys took on Leaside in the Semis and ended up
shutting out the opponent with a 2-0 win. At the finals at Brockton Stadium,
the LP Boys took on 1st seed East York. The match was even in the first half
but come the second half boys fell short and lost 4-1. Overall the season for
the LP Boys turned out to be successful, with a 2nd place finish in the season
and the South Region Finalists title with a silver medal to go along with it.
These boys will have 2 or 3 years left in high school so the talent will remain
with LP, and hopefully a greater success.
For the Senior Boys, and captains Grant Gibson
and Brady Coyle; the Senior Boys Soccer team had an outstanding season,
finishing 1st place overall in the South Region. The team was undefeated,
finishing with a record of 5-0-1 along with, conceding no goals against.
Conceding no goals against was a huge
accomplishment for the Boys, something that no LP team has done in the past few
years. They ended up being the number 1 seed going in to the City Playoffs.
Their quarterfinal match was against Western Tech, where they ended up winning
3-2. Next for the boys was a Semi Final match against Forrest Hill CI, where
the game needed extra time after a 0-0, 90 minute match.
The match eventually went into a penalty shoot-out where Lawrence Park ended up
winning a thriller and moving on to the Finals for the first time. In the
Finals they played East York who was a team that has won the South Region title
many times. The game was close for most of the match, but the LP boys fell
short and lost 5-1.
Overall the season was successful for the Senior
LP boys. The Boys were first overall during the season, received a South Region
Finalists title and ended up making OFFSA.
This season the team had players who shined,
James Currie scored the most goals for the team, along with goal tender Andrew Aguanno who had no goals against during the season. The
Boys will now focus on OFFSA, which will be a huge step in LP soccer history.
By entering a few more tournaments to get prepared, along with having many
practices and exhibition games the Boys are hoping to win the provincial title.
The season was incredible; accomplishing things LP soccer has never seen
before. When asked for final thoughts on the season, keeper Andrew Aguanno said, “With a defense this great, a powerful
offence, and a keeper as awesome as me, this season turned out to be
spectacular. Our team bonded and became well known as a school that can play
soccer.”
For both the Jr. and Sr. boys, the season turned out to be very successful and probably one of the most memorable and high achieving seasons in LP Soccer history. Both teams brought home finalists’ titles and on-top of that the Senior Boys are going to OFFSA. LP now can be regarded, as one of the top schools for soccer and this will bring pride and joy to the students of LP.
